Nigeria, Philippines to forge stronger labour ties

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening labour cooperation with the Republic of the Philippines, saying that the move would safeguard workers’ interests, benefit both nations, and further deepen their long standing ties.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, who stated this when he received the Secretary, Migrant Workers, Republic of the Philippines, Hon. Hans Leo J. Cacdac and his team, on a visit to the Minister in Abuja, welcomed this gesture of the Republic of the Philippines to set up a Labour Desk in Nigeria, and promised the needed cooperation.

Head, Information and Public Relations of the ministry, Patience Onuobia made this known in a release recently on their X (former twitter) handle.

According to the statement, Dingyadi said, “I want to assure you that we are ready to partner with you in this area. Nigeria has a long-standing bilateral relationship with your country in other areas, including economy and socio-cultural. If we deepen and promote that relationship, it will be mutually beneficial to the two countries.

Meanwhile, Hon. Hans Leo J. Cacdac, the Secretary, Migrant Workers, Republic of the Philippines, earlier, had stated that the desire of the Government of the Phillipines to set up a labour desk under its embassy in Nigeria, is to coordinate the affairs of the Filipino migrant workers in the country. 

Cacdac revealed that there are about four thousand Filipino migrant workers in Nigeria, engaged in jobs essential to the economy of both Nigeria and the Philippines.
